Living and working in Athens: My experience as a customer service representative

Hello everyone!

Since October 2022, I have been living and working in Athens as a customer service agent, and I would love to share my experience with you! I was born and raised in a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). I completed my studies in Duisburg (Germany) while still living at home, which kept me strongly tied to my hometown.

After completing my studies, I wanted to experience something new before starting the stressful professional life in Germany. It was clear to me that I want to live in Athens, since I have already been there as a tourist. Therefore, I successfully applied for the customer service position via GoJobben.

Living in Athens – The arrival

When I arrived in Athens for the first time, I was quite excited and nervous. Excited because I would be working in a new country, learning a new language (perhaps), and experiencing a different culture. Nervous because I didn’t know anyone and wasn’t sure if I would be able to live and work in a foreign country.

However, all my doubts were immediately dispelled when I started working. The company I work for provides comprehensive training for all new employees, including language and cultural training. The training was very helpful and gave me the confidence to communicate with customers in German and English.

During the training, I also met a lot of great people from all over the world. The training itself is conducted in English, but my actual work is in German. An important decision factor for the job was the international work environment. I am very interested in other cultures and enjoy working with people from 35 different countries.

Working in Athens – My job

As a customer service agent, my main responsibility was to help German-speaking customers with all their questions by phone, email, or social media. With zero experience in this industry, I am still surprised to this day how much I enjoy this job. I never thought I would enjoy working in customer service, but it is really satisfying to solve customers’ problems or answer their questions 🙂

Living in Athens is also an amazing experience. The city is simply wonderful, especially the architecture, and there is always something to do. The people are friendly and the food is simply fantastic. One of my favorite activities in Athens was and still is visiting the Acropolis and watching the sunset from there.

My tips

If you’re thinking of moving to Athens to work as a customer service agent or whatever activity, here are some tips to make your first few weeks in Athens easier:

  • Learn basic Greek: Although most people in Athens speak English, learning some basic Greek phrases will help you communicate with locals and get to know the culture better.
  • Be open-minded: Working and living in a new country can be a challenge, but it can also be a great experience. Be open-minded and embrace the new culture and lifestyle.
  • Make use of your free time: Athens is a beautiful city with a lot to offer. Use your free time to explore the city and its surroundings because who knows when you will have the opportunity again. Use the weekend to visit the many different sights of Athens, for example, a visit to the ancient city of Delphi (about 2.5 hours away from Athens).
  • Join local expat groups: Joining local expat groups is an easy way to meet new people and make friends. Here, people from all nations gather. You can find expat groups on Facebook (Expats Athens) or on

In summary, I would like to say that living in Athens has exceeded my expectations. In a short time, I have made lots of friends, both outside and inside the company, and I enjoy the work. What more could you ask for?

Maybe see you soon in Athens!
